Job Description
Nestled in the heart of Ventura County and just minutes from California's scenic coastline, Camarillo is a vibrant city that perfectly blends small-town charm with a forward-thinking and innovative local government. The City of Camarillo is committed to delivering outstanding community services while fostering a dynamic and empowered workforce that reflects the high standards and values of the community it serves. This dedication to excellence makes Camarillo an exceptional place to work and contribute to meaningful public service.
The City of Camarillo's Community Development Department plays a crucial role in guiding the growth and development of the city, ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and in compliance with relevant regulations. The department is known for its commitment to transparency, accountability, and quality customer service for residents, businesses, and developers alike.
The position of Principal Development Concierge is a key role within the Community Development Department and is designed for a highly collaborative individual with a strong customer service orientation. This role acts as the central point of contact for applicants, developers, businesses, and City staff, facilitating and coordinating development projects through the City’s planning and permitting processes. This position requires a deep understanding of city planning processes, building and fire codes, entitlement procedures, and the ability to work with various internal departments and external stakeholders effectively. The Principal Development Concierge ensures that applicants receive clear communication and assistance in navigating complex regulations, expediting project delivery, and resolving conflicts or challenges that arise throughout the process.
Ideal candidates will bring experience from Community Development Departments, Building and Safety, Planning, Economic Development, or private sector roles such as engineering, architecture, planning, or expediting. Additionally, familiarity with related disciplines like right-of-way, engineering, and stormwater management is highly beneficial. This role is pivotal in balancing regulatory compliance with business-supportive practices as part of the City's economic development priorities.
Under general direction, the Principal Development Concierge independently manages and coordinates a wide range of planning and development projects and activities. The position reports to the Director of Community Development and requires someone who can provide high-level concierge-style customer service, ensuring transparency, accountability, and an excellent customer experience in City processes.
Candidates with a bachelor's degree in urban planning, engineering, architecture, public administration, business administration, or a related field are preferred. Five years of progressively responsible professional experience in planning, development services, or customer service program administration is required. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of municipal planning, permitting procedures, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), federal laws, zoning regulations, and land economics. Strong skills in communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and project management are essential.
The role demands the ability to coordinate multiple projects, communicate complex regulatory requirements effectively, develop innovative solutions, and maintain positive relationships with applicants and City staff. Physical demands include working primarily in an office setting with some site visits, and the role may require extended hours including evenings and weekends as needed. The City of Camarillo is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Employees in this position also play a vital role in disaster services assignments, reinforcing the City’s commitment to community preparedness and safety.
