Job Description
The YWCA of the City of New York (YW-NYC) is a pioneering social justice organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all individuals. Established in 1858 as the first YWCA in the United States, YW-NYC is part of a global movement advocating for equity and social change. With a robust history spanning over 160 years, YW-NYC has built significant programs aimed at supporting youth and families within New York City’s diverse communities. Currently, YW-NYC serves approximately 1,500 school children through its innovative Girls Initiatives and Out-of-School Time (OST) programs. These programs are designed to provide essential leadership and advocacy training to young women and create safe, enriching environments for elementary and middle school students in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The Assistant Director position at YW-NYC is a part-time role that plays a crucial role in the effective administration and leadership of the OST program. Reporting directly to the Program Director, the Assistant Director will provide site-based leadership within school-based OST settings, connecting closely with students, families, and school communities. This role aligns with YW-NYC’s mission to foster positive youth development and address critical social issues related to race, class, and gender. The position offers an hourly pay rate starting at $25.00 and typically requires about 25 hours of work per week. The working hours fluctuate within the range of 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, reflecting the needs of the partnering schools. The Assistant Director must be capable of occasional travel across New York City to manage site operations and engage effectively with school stakeholders. Additionally, candidates are expected to have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and use technology such as computers and phones to communicate and support program activities.
In this dynamic and impactful role, the Assistant Director is responsible for providing direct supervision and operational support in the absence of the Program Director. They lead and coach staff members, ensure compliance with licensing and funder requirements, and manage program data meticulously. The successful candidate will utilize positive youth development principles to create an inclusive and engaging atmosphere that supports the learning and growth of all participants. They will help facilitate high-quality program delivery, including family engagement events and professional development sessions for staff. Key responsibilities also include nurturing strong partnerships with school personnel and families, maintaining detailed program records, supporting program logistics such as schedule development and attendance tracking, and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines from organizations such as the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
To succeed in this role, the Assistant Director will harness strong organizational and interpersonal skills and uphold a commitment to social justice principles, including anti-racism, gender equity, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This position requires proficiency in technology, including familiarity with telecommunication platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Office suite, as well as access to reliable internet and personal computing devices due to elements of eLearning incorporated into the program. Bilingual abilities, especially in Spanish and English, are advantageous but not mandatory.
Being part of YW-NYC means working within a historic and mission-driven organization committed to social change and youth empowerment. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of New York City’s youth, support the professional growth of staff, and contribute to the long-standing legacy of advancing racial and gender justice.
