Job Description

The Substitute position offered by 555 Franklin St. Administration is a vital role within SFUSD's Student Nutrition Services Department. This temporary exempt, as-needed appointment offers a competitive hourly wage ranging between $22.29 and $31.17. The position requires flexibility to cover any shift between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at any SFUSD school site, ensuring the delivery of nutritious and appealing meals to students. Reporting to the School Lunchroom Supervisor, the School Lunchroom Helper assists in the preparation and serving of food, maintains food safety and sanitation standards, and provides excellent customer service to students and staff. This role emphasizes compliance with food safety regulations, inventory management, and the use of a Point of Sale system to process meal transactions while respecting student confidentiality. The position involves regular physical effort and working in a kitchen environment with associated health and safety considerations. It is essential for the candidate to have prior kitchen experience, a Food Safety certification, and the ability to operate basic office equipment. Job Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months of routine kitchen work experience including use of a computer and point of sale software
  • Possession and maintenance of a current Food Safety certification

  • Knowledge of food and supply ordering, receiving, and inventory control
  • Skills to operate basic office equipment including computer, peripherals, telephone
  • Ability to perform various kitchen tasks
  • Ability to meet work schedules and timelines
  • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and interruptions
  • Ability to keep records including basic arithmetic operations
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Ability to operate a Point of Sale system independently

Job Duties

  • Prepare and heat a variety of food items such as salads, sandwiches, soups, grain and noodle dishes, and bagged lunches following standard menus and recipes
  • Ensure meals are appetizing, nutritious, and in accordance with SFUSD’s Student Nutrition Program standards
  • Serve food to students and staff in a courteous and efficient manner
  • Maintain high standards of customer service and professional communication both verbal and written
  • Uphold strict food safety and sanitation practices including compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines
  • Practice FIFO inventory management procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, storage areas, equipment, and utensils
  • Sanitize work surfaces, tables, and floors
  • Operate dishwashing equipment and hand-wash kitchen tools and serving trays as required
  • Use Point of Sale system to process transactions, identify reimbursable meals, and maintain student confidentiality
  • Complete necessary software procedures including logging in/out, entering cash totals, and troubleshooting system errors
  • Maintain accurate documentation and complete required forms and logs as assigned by the supervisor
  • Participate in staff meetings and mandatory training sessions
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned
