The role of Sommelier/Server at La Toque is a vital position designed for individuals passionate about wine, fine dining service, and customer engagement. This position requires the successful candidate to have at least two years of sommelier experience in a similar upscale setting as well as strong service skills and extensive wine and food knowledge. The applicant must be able to manage a demanding, fast-paced fine-dining atmosphere, providing meticulous and personalized wine service directly to guests. This role blends the responsibilities of a floor sommelier with those of a server, allowing for dynamic interaction with guests and collaboration with the culinary and wine teams to deliver exceptional wine and food pairings. Attention to detail under pressure, computer savvy, excellent communication skills, professionalism, and a hospitable demeanor are essential. Candidates must be prepared to work nights, weekends, and holidays and should display enthusiasm, reliability, and team spirit consistent with La Toque’s mission to sustain outstanding guest experiences. This part-time or full-time position offers hourly pay ranging between $20.00 and $75.00 plus service charges, along with advancement opportunities and a full benefits package for full-time employment. The ideal Sommelier/Server will contribute to a harmonious working atmosphere, maintain cleanliness and organization, participate in educational tastings, and support operational goals effectively while upholding La Toque’s high standards of service and hospitality.

Job Requirements

  • minimum of 2 years as a sommelier in a similar setting
  • must be at least 21 years of age
  • valid current CA Food Handler Card or willingness to obtain within 30 days of employment
  • valid current CA RBS Certification or willingness to obtain within 60 days
  • ability to speak, read, write and understand English
  • high school diploma or GED
  • ability to work independently
  • flexible to work nights, weekends and holidays
  • safe work habits and awareness of safety procedures
  • ability to meet physical requirements of the position
  • reliable attendance
  • willingness to comply with restaurant policies and grooming standards
  • ability to stand, walk up to 8 hours
  • ability to bend, crouch, kneel, push/pull up to 100 lbs
  • ability to work in a fine dining environment

Job Qualifications

  • extensive wine and spirits knowledge
  • minimum certified level certification through CMS, WSET or ASA
  • minimum of 2 years' experience as a sommelier in a similar setting

Job Duties

  • work with a WS Grand Award-winning wine list
  • provide strong wine and food pairings

  • maintain and stock wine coolers and cellar

  • assist service staff by running food, refilling beverages and clearing tables

  • attend and participate in meetings and trainings
  • provide feedback on guest comments to management
  • report employee and guest accidents
  • be knowledgeable of all food and beverage offerings and explain them to guests
  • complete additional tasks assigned by management
