The Mile High City may be picturesque, but it boasts more than just Rocky Mountain scenery. From its roots as a gold mining town, Denver has grown into a leader in the communications, utilities, and transportation industries. The city boasts a population of almost 600,000 people in a metropolitan area of about 3 million. The city is located at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains and is the capital of the State of Colorado. Denver’s government consists of an elected non-partisan Mayor and Auditor, and a 13-member City Council. Nine main departments, which include public works, environmental health, and human services, carry out the functions of the city. Its annual budget totals some $855 million.
