The Prep Cook position at Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op is a vital role in the kitchen department, reporting directly to the Kitchen Manager. This non-exempt, unionized role (Teamsters Local 150) is perfect for individuals passionate about food preparation and customer service within a cooperative business environment. The Prep Cook is responsible for preparing both packaged and fresh hot or salad bar foods that meet the Co-op’s high standards for quality and presentation. Maintaining attractive product displays and ensuring excellent customer service are central to this role. The Prep Cook also plays an essential role in maintaining department cleanliness, safety protocols, and productivity, ensuring a smooth operation in the kitchen.
Daily responsibilities involve the preparation of food products according to specific recipes and company specifications, labeling and packaging items properly for sale and display, and providing courteous and efficient service to customers from diverse backgrounds. The role demands vigilance in adhering to safety standards, utilizing kitchen equipment safely, and maintaining accurate records such as logs and checklists. Additionally, the Prep Cook assists with inventory counts, storewide cleaning, and other special projects, reflecting the cooperative’s team-oriented culture.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience in food preparation or related kitchen role preferred
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work with diverse populations
- Availability to work scheduled shifts including weekends and holidays
- Basic math skills including measurement and recipe follow-through
- Food Handler certification or willingness to obtain
- Ability to follow safety and sanitation guidelines
- Dependable and punctual with good attendance
- Willingness to wear required uniform and maintain professional appearance
Job Qualifications
- Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
- Communicate effectively and respectfully in oral and written form

Job Duties
- Uphold all Co-op policies, procedures and expectations
- Exceed customer expectations for service providing a welcoming environment for all
- Model and ensure customers receive prompt, friendly and courteous service
- Maintain a calm and friendly demeanor with customers
- Produce food products that meet quality and quantity standards
- Follow procedures for labeling, dating, and packaging products
- Serve case items following department pricing and packaging procedures
- Maintain working knowledge of buffet and case product ingredients and preparation
- Prioritize time efficiently to handle food prep, stocking, cleaning, and customer service
- Follow procedures for processing known loss, invoices, special orders, and transfers
- Maintain knowledge and procedures for receiving supplies and products
- Anticipate dishwashing and food prep responsibilities to meet department needs
- Maintain back stock knowledge and inform management of shortages
- Maintain documentation logs and checklists for stations
- Use equipment safely and properly according to training
- Adhere to scheduled shifts and be ready for work
- Wear proper clothing as per dress code
- Maintain accurate and attractive signage
- Keep the department orderly and clean
- Assist in inventory counts and storewide cleaning
- Attend meetings and events as requested
- Ensure equipment repair and maintenance communication
