Job Description
The Los Angeles LGBT Center is a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to building a world where LGBT people thrive as healthy, equal, and complete members of society. Established as a community beacon, the Center offers a wide range of services including health, social services, housing, cultural programs, and educational opportunities tailored specifically for the LGBT community. Located in Los Angeles, the Center is recognized for its commitment to advocacy, inclusion, and providing supportive environments that empower LGBT individuals from all walks of life. It champions an intersectional approach to equity and social justice, ensuring diverse representation and access to resources that help improve the quality of life for the community it serves. As a certified social enterprise, the Culinary Arts Program at the Center exemplifies this mission by using food as a tool for community building and career development.
The Culinary Arts Program at the Los Angeles LGBT Center is a unique initiative that exposes the power of food to unite an intergenerational campus, fostering connections among members while empowering students to embark on meaningful careers in the hospitality industry. Enrolling approximately 100 students annually, the program offers comprehensive culinary training and produces over 450 meals daily for various Center program participants. Its operations include running the Center's café, Liberation Coffee House, and providing catering services that support events and outreach efforts.
This job opening for a Prep Cook / Dishwasher is integral to the program’s success, working closely with the Executive Sous Chef Instructor to ensure the kitchen operates efficiently and maintains the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. This is a full-time, temporary, union position offering a flexible schedule, which includes a shift differential premium for evening and night hours worked. The role demands physical stamina and attention to detail, as well as a commitment to fostering a respectful and educational environment for culinary students. The Prep Cook / Dishwasher supports meal production, event catering, ingredient preparation, and adherence to health code regulations, all while being a positive professional role model to students participating in the program.
Candidates with prior food service experience, formal culinary or nutritional training, and a passion for working within the LGBT community will find this opportunity rewarding and impactful. The Los Angeles LGBT Center values diversity and inclusivity and seeks individuals who demonstrate effective communication skills, time management, and sensitivity to cultural and social dynamics. The employee in this position will have the chance to contribute to a vibrant community-centered kitchen, where every meal served strengthens the Center’s mission of inclusivity, empowerment, and social change.
