Job Description
OurCalling is a Christ-centered ministry dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness and crisis. Rooted in the Gospel and powered by innovation, OurCalling operates with the deep conviction that every job within the organization is a ministry position. This faith-based non-profit organization provides compassionate and personalized care through its Street Outreach and Navigation Center, walking alongside those in need as they journey from the streets toward hope, stability, and transformation. The ministry not only addresses immediate needs but also pursues real, lasting solutions to help end homelessness one life at a time. With a focus on restoration rather than relocation, OurCalling helps neighbors discover a sense of belonging, purpose, and healthy community, encouraging steps toward living in a Christ-centered and supportive environment.
OurCalling’s culture is one that is welcoming, intentional, hopeful, and adaptable. Staff and volunteers serve with humility and courage, grounded in the Gospel, embracing diversity of backgrounds and experiences. The ministry prioritizes loving neighbors with compassion, accountability, and a commitment to lasting change, always recognizing the inherent dignity of every individual they serve.
The position of Kitchen Assistant I plays a pivotal role in supporting OurCalling's mission by contributing to the daily kitchen operations that nourish both guests and volunteers. As the leader of the upstairs catering kitchen, this role requires managing daily food preparation, overseeing meal service, and training volunteers under the supervision of the Food Service Manager. The kitchen serves as a vital resource for preparing and distributing meals, and this role is integral in ensuring the kitchen is functional, safe, and welcoming for all who utilize it.
This position typically operates Tuesday through Saturday, with some flexibility required to meet the organization's needs. The Kitchen Assistant I ensures proper organization and sanitation of all food storage areas, the safety and security of food deliveries, and collaborates closely with the Food Service Manager to plan and execute meal service during Inclement Weather Service events.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate both technical kitchen skills and a heart aligned with the ministry’s mission. Serving individuals who have experienced trauma and crisis, this ministry position requires sensitivity, humility, and the ability to use interactions as opportunities to embody the love of Christ and foster trust. By managing and leading meal services, the Kitchen Assistant not only supports the practical needs of the ministry but also plays a role in cultivating an environment where guests experience dignity, respect, and hope.
OurCalling offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $17 per hour, reflecting the therapeutic and practical importance of this role within the organization. Beyond compensation, the ministry provides a comprehensive benefits package designed to support the well-being and growth of its staff, making this position both a meaningful and sustainable career opportunity for those called to serve through food service ministry.
