The Food Service Specialist plays a critical role within IDEA Public Schools by ensuring that students receive appropriate quantities of nutritious, fresh food daily. This position involves preparing, portioning, and serving food to IDEA students while adhering to established kitchen protocols and recipes. In addition to food preparation, the role requires maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen environment, including tasks like sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, and proper trash disposal. Beyond food service, the specialist is responsible for monitoring students during meal periods to promote positive behavior and encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables. The successful candidate must have the ability to understand food safety, handle kitchen equipment, and perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting and moving tables, operating medium to large kitchen appliances, and maintaining a safe kitchen environment. Job Requirements
- High school diploma preferred
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a physically active role requiring standing for multiple hours
- Ability to follow food safety and sanitation guidelines
- Capability to handle kitchen equipment and utensils
- Basic math skills for food portioning
- Ability to monitor and encourage proper student behavior during meal periods
- Physical ability to perform lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting tasks
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma preferred but not required
- At least 1 year of experience in a physically active job that requires standing for multiple hours
- Ability to understand and apply food handling and sanitation practices
- Ability to operate kitchen equipment and perform basic math related to portioning
- Food handler's permit preferred
- Proven ability to work well under pressure in a team environment
- Physical capability to lift, bend, push, pull, and twist as needed
Job Duties
- Prepare appropriate quantities of food according to recipes and established procedures
- Portion and serve food to IDEA students during meal periods
- Monitor students for appropriate behavior and encourage consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables
- Perform kitchen cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, and disposing of trash
- Operate kitchen equipment and utensils safely and effectively
- Adapt to changing roles such as switching between serving food and cleaning tasks
- Assist with moving cafeteria tables daily and managing shared cafeteria/gymnasium spaces
