Carlisle itself boasts a designation by Forbes as one of the "most livable cities," providing a welcoming atmosphere that combines the charm of a small town with access to metropolitan amenities. The college's close proximity to major cities such as Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New York City further enhances the appeal of studying and working at Dickinson by offering both cultural and professional opportunities within a short drive.
Dickinson College is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse community that encourages intellectual growth and social engagement. The college offers full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical and life insurance, flexible spending accounts, generous paid time off, parental leave, homebuyer assistance, and tuition benefits applicable to eligible employees and their dependent children under 24 years of age. Additionally, Dickinson contributes significantly to employees’ retirement plans, providing an 8% contribution of base salary plus a 0.5% matching contribution, which vests immediately, ensuring financial stability and security for its staff.
The position within the Dining Services - Retail Operations at Dickinson College is essential for creating positive dining experiences for college guests. The role involves delivering outstanding customer service, preparing food according to standardized recipes, and maintaining high standards of sanitation and cleanliness. This is a vital position that supports the college’s commitment to health, safety, and excellent service by adhering to HACCP guidelines, state health department regulations, OSHA standards, and ServSafe certification requirements.
Individuals working in this role are expected to develop and maintain positive relationships with guests and coworkers, contributing to a welcoming and efficient retail dining environment. Responsibilities include greeting guests warmly, managing food preparation and presentation skillfully, handling cash in accordance with college policies, and keeping the retail location organized and well stocked. Staff members also play a crucial role in assisting guests with food allergies or special dietary requests, thereby ensuring a safe and inclusive dining experience for all.
This position requires physical stamina as it involves continuous standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, and bending, along with occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds. It also mandates effective communication skills for interacting with guests and team members. The scheduled hours are typically Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the academic year, with additional work opportunities available during summer camps in the Dining Hall.
Employees in this role are classified as emergency response personnel, which means they may be called upon during college closures or delays due to weather or other emergencies, highlighting the importance of reliability and readiness in this position. ServSafe certification is either required or must be obtained within one year of hire, emphasizing the college’s dedication to food safety standards.
