Job Description
Joe Coffee Company was founded in 2003 by Jonathan Rubinstein as a single specialty coffee shop located in Manhattan's West Village. This establishment was born from a simple yet powerful vision: to brew exceptional coffee and create a welcoming space for the community. Over the years, Joe Coffee has grown substantially and now operates 24 cafes throughout New York City, accompanied by its very own Roastery in Long Island City. The company's commitment to quality, hospitality, and education remains at the core of its business model, making it a recognized pioneer within the specialty coffee industry in New York. Joe Coffee is also known for its dedication to its employees, believing strongly that a great coffee experience hinges as much on the barista as it does the coffee itself. This philosophy drives their investment in industry-leading training programs and fostering long-term career growth for their team members.
Joe Coffee is currently seeking curious and committed Baristas in Training (BITs) who have a passion for specialty coffee and are eager to grow into certified Joe Coffee baristas. This entry-level role offers a unique opportunity to learn the craft of coffee making from the ground up, perfect for individuals who are motivated to develop their skills in a fast-paced, inclusive, and collaborative environment. The position offers competitive compensation at $17 per hour plus tips and is designed to provide comprehensive hands-on experience in all aspects of café operations. Baristas in Training support daily café activities while building foundational barista skills and delivering thoughtful customer service that reflects Joe Coffee's high hospitality standards.
In this role, new team members will be trained to prepare an array of coffee and non-espresso beverages—including drip coffee, cold brew, tea, matcha, and seasonal drinks—as well as food items in line with company recipes and quality expectations. Attention to cleanliness, organization, and food safety is essential, as employees uphold the café’s environment by adhering to strict cleaning and sanitation protocols. Training, coaching, and ongoing feedback form central components of the role, ensuring that trainees graduate into fully certified baristas capable of representing Joe Coffee’s commitment to excellence.
Furthermore, Joe Coffee offers a comprehensive benefits package reflecting their dedication to employee well-being, growth, and happiness. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance available after six months of employment, employee assistance programs, pre-tax commuter benefits, and a 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching. The company also provides financial incentives like bonuses, referral rewards, and team recognition programs, alongside growth opportunities through in-depth barista training, paid continuing education, mentorship programs, and origin trips to coffee sources.
Joe Coffee fosters a vibrant community culture through events such as The Joe Show, holiday celebrations, and latte art throwdowns, helping to build strong team connections. Additional perks like subsidized Citi Bike or Lyft Pink memberships and free financial literacy workshops demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to enhancing employee experience beyond the workplace.
Committed to inclusivity and equal opportunity, Joe Coffee Company embraces diversity and prohibits discrimination in all employment decisions based on race, color, religion, national origin, citizenship, age, disability, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristic. The company also supports reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Joining Joe Coffee as a Barista in Training is an excellent opportunity for those passionate about coffee and eager to enter the specialty coffee industry. Ideal candidates are reliable, friendly, fast-paced, and thrive in teamwork-driven environments. Prior coffee shop experience and customer service background are desirable but not mandatory. Above all, candidates should value hospitality and be willing to work flexible schedules to contribute meaningfully to the Joe Coffee experience.
