Job Description
Colonial School District is a large educational organization serving over 10,000 students across more than 16 schools in the New Castle, Delaware area. This district is deeply committed to creating warm, welcoming, and student-centered learning environments. With a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, Colonial School District dedicates its efforts toward addressing educational inequity through its guiding philosophy, the Power of We. This philosophy emphasizes collaboration and community across four pillars: Early Childhood, Leadership & Learning, Innovation, and Access & Opportunity. The school district prides itself on fostering a respectful and inclusive environment free from discrimination based on race, creed, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, domicile, marital status, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic. Employees and students alike benefit from this commitment to equality and support throughout their educational and professional journeys.
The School Nutrition General Worker - Substitute (Casual/Seasonal) position is an essential role within the Colonial School District’s Nutrition Services department. It supports the provision of nutritious meal services to students during breakfast and lunch periods at various school locations in the district. This substitute role operates on an as-needed basis, offering flexibility in working hours but without a set schedule or guaranteed number of hours. Typically, the workday involves shifts of approximately three hours, usually in the late morning to early afternoon (either 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). The position supports meal service by preparing, serving, and ensuring the safety and sanitation of food, as well as maintaining cleanliness in kitchen and dining areas. Employee responsibilities include setting up serving lines, delivering food to students and staff, cashiering, dishwashing, and other cleaning tasks to uphold a hygienic and organized meal service environment.
Compensation for this non-exempt substitute role starts at $20.58 per hour, with an anticipated pay increase scheduled for September 19, 2025. Workers in this position must be able to manage physical demands such as lifting up to 40 pounds and standing on hard surfaces for extended periods, while also working effectively in a fast-paced and sometimes extreme temperature environment. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, basic literacy skills, and compliance with food safety and sanitation standards, including obtaining ServeSafe certification. This casual, seasonal role offers the opportunity for personal and professional growth through district-sponsored training and in-service education. This is a crucial front-line job that helps ensure students receive healthy and well-prepared meals in a supportive, clean setting that enhances their school day experience.
