Retail Buyer Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate current supplier offerings
  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers to promote fair dealings
  • Liaise with shop personnel to ensure supply meets demand
  • Visit fashion shows and trade fairs to find new products
  • Conduct market research on consumer and product trends
  • Handle administrative tasks such as purchase orders, stock control and logistic documents
  • Provide information on products, prices and promotions
  • Provide samples for customers
  • Handle customer inquiries and requests
  • Suggest strategies to improve customer satisfaction
  • Prepare and present sales projections and budget reports
  • Liaise with other departments to ensure project completion
  • Participate in promotional activities
  • Train junior staff

Retail Buyer Experience Requirements & Skills

  • Proven background as a Retail Buyer
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, interpersonal, time management and negotiation skills
  • Strong report writing and presentation abilities
  • Familiarity with market research, data analysis and forecasting methodologies
  • Knowledgeable about retail products and consumer trends
  • Knowledgeable in logistics and distribution
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving proficiency
  • Proficient in MS Office; familiarity with purchasing software is advantageous
  • Ability to handle pressure, make important decisions and meet tight deadlines
  • Comprehensive understanding of the store’s niche and ideal customer profiles
  • Genuine passion for the retail industry

Retail Buyer Education & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or a similar field is a plus
