Cost Accountant Duties & Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining the cost accounting system, documents and records
  • Determining and calculating formulas for fixed and variable costs
  • Analyzing organizational data and determining labor, depreciation and overhead rates
  • Advising executives on appropriate costing based on financial data
  • Recommending changes to company processes and policies for cost reduction and profit maximization
  • Preparing budgeting reports for the company and each department
  • Preparing and presenting audit reports to management
  • Analyzing changes in goods or services to determine their impact on costs
  • Collecting cost information for analysis and maintaining an expense database
  • Constructing systems to accumulate and monitor data
  • Preparing cost forecasts for monthly, quarterly or annual operating schedules
  • Supporting other company accountants with invoicing and capital expenditure
  • Reviewing receipts for inaccuracies
  • Performing account reconciliations

Cost Accountant Experience Requirements & Skills

  • Proven work experience as a Cost Accountant, Cost Analyst or similar role
  • In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Advanced proficiency in mathematics and statistics
  • Excellent attention to detail in all financial activities
  • Strong financial analysis skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of organizational accounting concepts
  • Competence in performing risk and security assessments
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to prepare detailed financial reports and provide recommendations based on available data
  • Strong conceptual and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills, encompassing writing, speaking and active listening
  • Superb organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Capability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Integrity, with an ability to handle confidential information

Cost Accountant Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, Finance or a relevant field
  • Having a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is a plus
