Camera Operator Duties & Responsibilities

  • Select, assemble and set up technical equipment for shooting, including cameras, lenses and accessories
  • Capture dynamic and visually compelling action sequences for television, film, commercials and other visual broadcasts
  • Collaborate closely with creative staff and production colleagues to determine the most effective approaches for capturing scenes
  • Follow camera scripts with precision to ensure continuity and meet specific project requirements
  • Creatively frame and capture action, contributing to the overall composition that effectively communicates the narrative
  • Respond promptly to directions during the shoot, making real-time adjustments as needed
  • Liaise with lighting and technical staff to achieve optimal visual results
  • Work collaboratively with other camera operators and assistants as part of the production team

Camera Operator Experience Requirements & Skills

  • Previous experience as a Camera Operator in television, film, commercials or related visual media
  • Familiarity with different camera types, such as single and multiple portable cameras, remote-control and electronic cameras
  • Quick response to directions and the ability to make real-time adjustments during a shoot
  • Ability to follow camera scripts with precision to maintain continuity and meet project requirements
  • A keen eye for framing shots and capturing action in a visually compelling manner
  • Effective communication skills to liaise with lighting and technical staff
  • Collaborative approach when working with other camera operators and assistants
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and find solutions on the spot
  • Meticulous attention to detail for achieving the desired composition and visual storytelling

Camera Operator Education & Qualification Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Portfolio or reel showcasing the camera operator’s previous work
  • Professional training or certification in cinematography or a bachelor’s degree in film, broadcasting or a related field is a plus
