Job Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate or equivalent certification
  • ability to travel independently including possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or comparable license or use of alternate transportation
  • ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • availability to work evenings and/or weekends
  • must meet physical and health condition standards required to perform position duties

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school
  • possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate or equivalent certification
  • current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate (not required for the immediate vacancy at the Department of Parks and Recreation)
  • ability to travel independently to various geographic locations
  • knowledge of lifesaving techniques and emergency life support including CPR and first aid
  • skills in pool water filtration and purification
  • ability to prepare operational and incident reports
  • capability to tactfully and effectively deal with the public

Job Duties

  • Watches over patrons at a public swimming pool to protect life and prevent accidents
  • rescues swimmers and assists others in distress
  • provides first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as necessary
  • enforces safety regulations and takes corrective action to ensure the safety of patrons
  • warns parents or responsible adults not to leave young children unattended
  • prepares daily log and reports describing accidents, first aid given, drowning or near drowning, and other unusual occurrences
  • assists and participates in program planning and scheduling, and conducting and coordinating aquatic instructional and recreational activities
