Job Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification excluding shallow water or aquatic attraction certifications
  • possession of a valid driver's license or equivalent means of transportation
  • ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • pass swim and agility test administered by the department
  • availability to work evenings and/or weekends
  • ability to meet physical and health standards for the position
  • ability to travel independently
  • maintenance of current certifications
  • willingness to attend in-person interviews or testing if required
  • submission of required documentation including transcripts and certifications

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • possession of current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification
  • possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate for certain positions
  • ability to travel independently to various locations
  • ability to demonstrate lifesaving and emergency life support techniques
  • ability to administer first aid and CPR
  • ability to prepare clear and concise reports
  • ability to enforce regulations tactfully
  • ability to conduct aquatic classes and activities
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • physical ability to perform rescues and maintain pool safety

Job Duties

  • Watch over patrons at a public swimming pool to protect life and prevent accidents
  • rescue swimmers and assist persons in distress
  • provide first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed
  • enforce safety regulations and take corrective action
  • warn parents or responsible adults about unattended children
  • prepare daily logs and incident reports
  • assist and participate in planning and conducting aquatic instructional and recreational programs
  • maintain water quality standards and record keeping
  • operate circulation and filtration machinery
  • maintain proper chemical standards using automated and manual application methods
  • travel independently to swim meets or events as required
  • maintain pool and surrounding areas for safety and cleanliness
  • attend in-service training classes
  • perform other related duties as assigned
