Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Prior experience or training in institutional cooking preferred
  • Ability to stand, kneel, crouch frequently
  • Capacity to lift and carry up to 20 lbs regularly
  • Ability to push, pull, or carry items between 20-100 lbs
  • Vision acuity for close and mid-range distances
  • Motor coordination for handling tools and equipment
  • Ability to travel independently within hospital areas
  • Good speaking and hearing abilities
  • Proficiency with modern office, computer, and telephone equipment
  • Capability to grasp and transport food, supplies, and equipment
  • Able to use knives safely
  • Able to manipulate cooking utensils and equipment
  • Accurate ingredient measurement skills
  • Ability to chop, mince, slice, and grate ingredients
  • Ability to adapt and maintain focus under stress
  • Ability to read and interpret policies, operating instructions, and documents
  • Ability to follow complex directions and standardized recipes
  • Organizational and planning skills
  • Basic math and communication skills
  • Ability to use departmental computer systems
  • Ability to manage multiple duties simultaneously
  • Ability to see, hear, taste, and smell food

  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

Job Duties

  • Prepare food for breakfast, lunch, and supper
  • Prepare hot food entrees, vegetables, soups, cereals, and special orders according to standardized recipes and computerized production systems
  • Clean and sanitize work surfaces and equipment
  • Collaborate with the department manager to develop new hot food items
  • Work other production positions as necessary to maintain service levels
  • Support hospital mission, vision, value statements, policies, and ethical standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned
