Job Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, microbiology, biology, or related field
  • Two years of experience in chemical or biological analyses including one year in wastewater plant laboratory analyses
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
  • Possession of a valid Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certification issued by the California Water Environment Association or similar
  • Ability to perform detailed laboratory tests and analyses
  • Familiarity with quality assurance and quality control protocols
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
  • Proficient with laboratory data management software
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to comply with safety regulations and laboratory procedures

Job Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in chemistry, microbiology, biology, or a related field
  • Two years of experience conducting chemical or biological analyses including one year performing wastewater plant laboratory analyses
  • Possession of a valid Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certification issued by the California Water Environment Association or similar agency
  • Knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures related to wastewater analysis
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control standards such as Standard Methods and TNI
  • Familiarity with NPDES permit program and ELAP requirements
  • Ability to independently conduct complex laboratory tests and analyze results
  • Strong skills in using computers and software related to laboratory data management
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and maintain laboratory cleanliness

Job Duties

  • Perform a variety of laboratory tests and analyses using certified and non-certified test methods including chemical and biological tests on wastewater samples
  • Assist in fulfilling sample events and activities
  • Maintain and apply quality assurance and quality control protocols
  • Create and support laboratory documentation including quality data, corrective actions, test records, and calibrations
  • Input, audit, and evaluate data and maintain databases through various software applications
  • Provide technical and analytical assistance to plant operation and industrial waste program personnel
  • Conduct field sampling and keep written records of observations
  • Prepare and maintain laboratory supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment
  • Operate and maintain laboratory and sampling equipment
  • Assist in laboratory upkeep and cleanliness including chemical hygiene and hazardous waste management
  • Observe and comply with all City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols
  • Perform other duties as assigned
