Job Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Class A or Class B commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements
  • must demonstrate proficiency on a minimum of three types of heavy equipment
  • four years of heavy equipment operation experience
  • two years of leadership experience in a related field
  • OSHA safety training and experience with sewer and storm water construction
  • ability to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM EST with occasional variations
  • capability to perform physical tasks including lifting, climbing, stooping, and operating machinery
  • ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships
  • must meet regular attendance requirements
  • position deemed essential during inclement weather requiring reporting to or remaining at work
  • ability to comply with essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations

Job Qualifications

  • Four years of experience operating heavy equipment
  • Class A or Class B commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements
  • demonstrated proficiency on at least three types of heavy equipment
  • two years of experience leading a work crew and performing administrative duties
  • experience with construction, installation, and maintenance of sewer and storm water pipes
  • OSHA safety training and experience related to sewer and storm water construction
  • knowledge of supervisory principles, work scheduling, heavy equipment operation, carpentry methods, building mechanical systems, parks and street construction and maintenance, storm water and sewer systems maintenance, masonry repair, confined spaces procedures, surveying, recordkeeping
  • skills in monitoring and evaluating staff, prioritizing work, developing budgets, interpreting technical specifications and blueprints, applying laws and safety regulations
  • ability to perform manual labor and use various tools and equipment
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • proficiency in computer systems and software

Job Duties

  • Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems
  • directs work, counseling, disciplining and completing employee performance appraisals
  • supervises major activities within the Waste Management Division of Public Works such as refuse collection, recyclables collection, brush collection, and container management
  • operates heavy equipment as necessary to complete assigned tasks including digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, paving and garbage collection
  • coordinates daily work activities, organizes, prioritizes and assigns work
  • monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work
  • ensures adherence to safety procedures including OSHA and MUTCD regulations
  • coordinates work activities with other departments, contractors, outside agencies
  • develops long-term goals and projects, drafts plans, blueprints and specifications
  • plans and coordinates projects including work order requests, prioritizing, scheduling, assigning projects to crews
  • develops long-term maintenance schedules and performs preventive maintenance
  • oversees operation and maintenance of department equipment providing training on proper use and repair
  • monitors inventory of equipment, supplies and parts and initiates requisitions
  • supervises general cleaning and maintenance to keep vehicles and equipment operable
  • supervises installation and repair of sewer and storm water pipes ensuring OSHA compliance
  • provides budgetary input and assists with department budgeting
  • performs administrative tasks such as processing timesheets, accident reports, and payroll
  • maintains and updates blueprints, maps and documentation
  • operates computer systems for data entry and record keeping
  • assists in manual tasks including garbage pickup, equipment troubleshooting, safety marker placement
  • communicates with various stakeholders to coordinate work and exchange information
  • maintains current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and professional advancements
  • meets attendance and interpersonal relationship standards
  • performs other duties as assigned
  • reports to work during inclement weather situations as an essential employee
