Job Requirements
- Two years experience as a cook or in food preparation
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment and safety protocols
- Completion or willingness to complete Texas Food Handlers Program certification within 60 days of hire
- Ability to follow recipes and food safety standards
- Capacity to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to perform physical tasks related to food preparation and kitchen sanitation
Job Qualifications
- Two years experience as a cook or in food preparation
- Short order and breakfast cooking experience preferred
- Working knowledge of kitchen equipment such as slicer, slow cooker, and proper knife handling
- Ability to safely operate kitchen equipment with training
- Proof of successful completion and certification of Texas Food Handlers Program or willingness to complete within 60 days of hire
- Ongoing education in culinary arts or commercial food production encouraged
Job Duties
- Review production sheets and menus to determine types and quantities of foods to be prepared
- Follow simple recipe and other production information to complete preparation of assigned menu items
- Arrange and present foods in an attractive and appetizing manner
- Observe and test food being cooked by tasting, smelling, and using a thermometer to ensure it is cooked according to standard recipe and health standards
- Prepare menu items including vegetables, fish, meat, casseroles, soups, and stews using established food production systems and kitchen equipment
- Follow instructions for batch cooling of daily menu items to facilitate efficient operation of tray line and dining room service areas
- Participate in monitoring food quality including temperature and accuracy
- Complete setup and placement of food items on resident tray line and food service areas
- Assist with dishroom duties like scraping plates, loading/unloading dish machine, and sorting silverware
- Maintain proper care, maintenance, and sanitation of work areas, equipment, and supplies
- Alert Chef or management of problems or needs concerning equipment, food supply, sanitation, and safety
- Maintain temperature logs and comply with department policies for quality assurance, safety, and infection control
- Attend all Department and community in-services, safety meetings, orientation, and other required meetings
- Participate in educational programs or developmental in-services to improve skill level
- Clean assigned areas following established cleaning procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Chef
