Job Description

The Food Service Specialist is responsible for providing nutritious meals to fellow Soldiers, ensuring they maintain optimal health and energy to meet the demands of military operations. This role involves learning to prepare, cook, and serve food for varied group sizes ranging from 25 to 2,500 Soldiers in diverse environments, including both field conditions and permanent facilities. Trainees in this position learn how to plan menus, follow strict dietary guidelines, maintain food safety and hygiene standards, and operate and maintain kitchen equipment. Job Requirements

  • Military enlistment in the Army National Guard
  • must be at least a junior in high school or have a high school diploma or GED certificate
  • must be between the ages of 17 and 35
  • must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards
  • must meet citizenship requirements

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • completion of Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training
  • ability to follow Army recipes and dietary guidelines
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
  • good physical fitness
  • interest in cooking, home economics, health, mathematics, accounting and chemistry
  • strong teamwork and communication skills

Job Duties

  • Bake, fry, braise, boil, simmer, steam and sauté as prescribed by Army recipes
  • operate, maintain and clean field kitchen equipment
  • perform preventive maintenance on garrison and field kitchen equipment
  • plan and prepare standard and dietetic menus
  • order food and supplies
  • ensure proper storage of meats, poultry and other perishable items
  • maintain food safety and facility sanitation
