Under 21 Covenant House New York, also known as Covenant House New York (CHNY), is the largest provider of shelter and services to youth experiencing homelessness in New York City. Established over 50 years ago, CHNY offers a comprehensive range of programs designed to support young individuals aged 16 to 24 in their journey toward independence and self-sufficiency.
Shelter and Housing Services
CHNY operates a 24-hour crisis shelter located at 460 West 41st Street in Manhattan. This facility provides immediate needs such as meals, clothing, medical attention, and a safe place to sleep.
For those requiring longer-term support, the Rights of Passage (ROP) program offers transitional housing for up to 24 months. It assists young adults in building independent living skills and securing permanent housing.
Additionally, CHNY runs Mother and Child Programs, offering shelter and comprehensive services to young mothers and their children. Permanent supportive housing options include the Family Covenant Program and Rapid Re-Housing Program, providing long-term solutions for young adult families.
Health and Wellness Services
The Health and Wellness Center at CHNY is a Federally Qualified Health Clinic delivering primary and preventive care to homeless adolescents, young adults, and their children.
Services include pediatric and adult primary care, pre- and post-natal care, STD screening (including HIV rapid-testing), health education, and referrals for specialty medical care. All services are provided regardless of a patient's ability to pay.
Education and Employment Support
Covenant Works (CovWorks) is CHNY's workforce development and educational support program. It prepares at-risk and homeless young people for employment, education advancement, and sustainable career paths.
CovWorks partners with businesses across New York City to ensure young people can obtain employment in various sectors.
Legal Services and Advocacy
CHNY provides direct legal services through in-house attorneys and referrals to outside service providers. The organization also advocates for systemic change by proposing solutions for issues affecting homeless, exploited, and trafficked youth.
This includes increasing funding for homeless youth and mental health services.
