The Ability Center

The Ability Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities in northwest Ohio. Located at 5605 Monroe Street, Sylvania, OH 43560, the center was established in 1920 and has been a cornerstone in advocating for and supporting the disability community for over a century.

Mission and Vision

The Ability Center's mission is to assist people with disabilities in living, working, and socializing within a fully accessible community. Their vision is to create equitable and inclusive communities for people living with disabilities.

Core Services

The center offers a comprehensive range of services designed to promote independence and community integration for individuals with disabilities, including:

• Advocacy: Engaging at local, state, and federal levels to promote positive change for people with disabilities.
• Assistance Dogs: Training and placing service and therapy dogs to assist individuals with daily needs and enhance their independence.
• Assistive Technology/Medical Equipment: Providing disability-related equipment at no cost to individuals to facilitate daily activities.
• Home Accessibility: Completing home modification projects through grant funding to make homes more accessible.
• Information and Referral: Offering consultations on disability topics and connecting individuals to other agencies to address needs.
• Youth and Transition Services: Providing independent living and employment skills for youth and young adults with disabilities through individual goal setting and group classes.

Community Engagement and Events

The Ability Center actively engages through events and programs that include:

• Inclusive Storytime at King Rd Library: A free event encouraging literacy and connections for children and their grown-ups.
• Together We Move: An all-inclusive movement event featuring a 2-mile trail, adaptive activities, and a special guest speaker.
• Scholarship Program: Offering up to $5,000 to students with disabilities pursuing college, trade schools, or certification programs.
