South Burlington School District

The South Burlington School District (SBSD) is a PreK-12 public education system located in South Burlington, Vermont. Serving approximately 2,600 students, the district comprises five schools:

• Three elementary schools: Gertrude Chamberlin School, Orchard School, and Rick Marcotte Central School
• Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School
• South Burlington High School

The district's mission is to ensure each student possesses the knowledge, skills, and character to lead a successful and responsible life.

In 2022, South Burlington High School achieved the number 2 spot in the U.S. News and World Report Public School Rankings.

The district received the number 1 spot in the 2022 Niche.com Chittenden County Public Schools rankings.

The district offers a range of programs to support student development, including art, music, and physical education at the elementary level.

It also has a robust afterschool and summer enrichment program called "School's Out" serving more than 300 students in grades Pre-K to 8.

Leadership Changes

In July 2025, Superintendent Violet Nichols resigned following months of pressure from the district's local teachers' union.

The union cited a toxic working relationship between the superintendent's office and staff as the reason for the pressure.
