About The Jefferson Lab
Industry
Other
Jefferson Lab, officially known as the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory located in Newport News, Virginia.
Established in 1984, the lab is renowned for its unique particle accelerator, the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), which enables scientists worldwide to explore the fundamental building blocks of matter.
Facility and Research
CEBAF is a state-of-the-art accelerator that propels electrons to high energies, allowing researchers to investigate the subatomic particles and forces that constitute the universe.
This facility has been instrumental in advancing understanding of nuclear physics and the strong force that binds quarks and gluons together.
Expansion and Initiatives
Jefferson Lab has expanded its mission beyond nuclear physics to include high-performance computing and data science.
In October 2023, the lab announced the High Performance Data Facility (HPDF) Hub, a $300-$500 million initiative aimed at providing advanced data analysis, networking, and storage resources.
This is designed to accelerate scientific discovery by offering seamless access to large and complex datasets, enhancing research across disciplines.
To support this mission, Jefferson Lab expanded its campus with the Applied Research Center (ARC).
In December 2023, ownership of the seven-story ARC was transferred to Jefferson Lab and the Department of Energy by the City of Newport News.
The ARC will serve as the gateway to Jefferson Lab, featuring:
- a dedicated visitor center
- a science education center
- modernized office spaces to foster collaboration and discovery
Collaborations
Jefferson Lab partnered with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in October 2023 to build the High Performance Data Facility Hub.
This partnership provides researchers with cutting-edge data management infrastructure, enhancing data analysis and storage capabilities.
Community Engagement
The lab is committed to education and public engagement through open house events. These events include hands-on science education activities for all ages.
Visitors can tour the facilities, interact with scientists, and learn about the lab's contributions to science and technology.
Location
Jefferson Lab is located in Newport News, VA, USA.
