The Jefferson County Board of Education (JEFCOED) is the governing body responsible for overseeing the public education system in Jefferson County, Alabama. Established in 1896, JEFCOED has grown to become the second-largest school district in the state, serving over 36,000 students across 57 schools.

JEFCOED's mission is to ensure rigorous learning for all students through engaging, innovative instruction, responsible resource management, and meaningful community and family collaboration focused on student success.

The district offers a diverse range of educational opportunities, including Signature Academies, Advanced Placement courses, International Baccalaureate programs, Dual Enrollment options, and a Virtual Academy.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin Jr., JEFCOED has been recognized for its commitment to educational excellence.

In March 2025, Dr. Gonsoulin was named the National Superintendent of the Year by AASA The School Superintendents Association.
