The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876 and headquartered in Washington, D.C. It represents all 141 accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools, nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems—including 51 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers—and 90 academic and scientific societies.

Through these institutions and organizations, the AAMC represents 148,000 faculty members, 83,000 medical students, and 115,000 resident physicians.

Mission and Focus Areas

  • Accreditation: The AAMC co-sponsors the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) with the American Medical Association (AMA). The LCME is the accrediting body for educational programs at medical schools in the United States and Canada.
  • Research and Data: The organization conducts studies, research, and publications on medical education, health care, and biomedical research. It provides valuable resources such as the State Physician Workforce Data Report, the Medical School Admissions Requirements (MSAR) guide, and the Report on Medical School Faculty Salaries.
