Bank Teller Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform various routine transactions, including cashing checks, accepting deposits, processing withdrawals and handling loan payments
  • Sell cashier’s and traveler’s checks
  • Open new accounts and exchange foreign currency
  • Evaluate customer needs, introduce new products and services and make sales referrals
  • Foster customer loyalty and ensure overall satisfaction
  • Resolve customer issues and provide relevant information to address inquiries
  • Ensure confidentiality of customer information
  • Comply with regulatory requirements and manage risk in financial transactions
  • Identify and prevent fraudulent activities to minimize losses
  • Maintain and balance cash drawers, reconcile discrepancies and handle currency responsibly
  • Package cash, roll coins and maintain a clean work area

Bank Teller Experience Requirements & Skills

  • Proven working experience in banking, personal banking, retail banking or financial services
  • Basic PC knowledge and familiarity with electronic equipment, such as cash drawers, receipt validators and money counters
  • Working knowledge of computer software used for financial products and services offered
  • Knowledge of bank policies, including filing suspicious activity reports and customer identification
  • Cash handling experience and on-the-job training may be required
  • Customer satisfaction-oriented with attention to detail and mathematical skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to handle inquiries and maintain accurate records
  • Strong organizational skills to keep workstations and drawers tidy and easily accessible
  • Good teamwork skills to assist other Bank Tellers as needed
  • Ability to multitask to quickly shift from transaction to transaction
  • Strong sales skills are a plus, along with a professional appearance and courteous manner
  • Ability to pass a background check
