Job Requirements

  • Minimum 6 months related experience in a zoological or wildlife facility for Level I
  • minimum 18 months related experience in a zoological or wildlife facility for Level II
  • minimum five years and 6 months related paid experience in a zoological or wildlife facility for Level III
  • possesses strong verbal and written English communication skills
  • holds a valid California driver's license and vehicle insurance
  • enrolled in the California Employer Pull Notice program
  • able to safely operate a vehicle
  • capable of bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing stairs or ladders regularly
  • able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally team lift up to 75 pounds
  • possesses visual acuity and color perception
  • able to receive detailed oral information
  • willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • able to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions
  • capable of working at heights
  • willing to occasionally travel

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 months part-time related experience in a zoological or animal facility
  • strong verbal and written English skills with the ability to effectively communicate with the public
  • bilingual skills are a plus
  • valid California driver's license and vehicle insurance
  • successful completion of the FCZ Drivers Training Program
  • ability to train animals on established behaviors
  • experience in animal welfare assessments
  • ability to provide training and guidance to seasonal keepers and volunteers
  • knowledge of zoo policies and safety protocols

Job Duties

  • Prepares and administers appropriate daily diets at designated times
  • implements effective behavioral enrichment for selected animals
  • observes animals' behavior for signs of illness or disorder and reports irregularities to supervisor
  • maintains accurate feeding, health, and welfare records of assigned animals
  • thoroughly cleans and disinfects assigned animal enclosures and maintains cleanliness throughout the day
  • assists hospital staff with medication preparation and administration
  • participates in the Emergency Response team during animal-related events
  • assists with crating and moving animals under supervision
  • safely operates a vehicle for business purposes
  • trains animals on established behaviors according to zoo policies
  • completes animal welfare assessments and collaborates with team to resolve welfare concerns
  • provides training and guidance to seasonal keepers and volunteers
  • writes protocols and updates standard operating procedures
  • assists in planning and coordinating daily operations within the animal care section
  • participates in animal transfers between facilities
  • may serve in studbook keeper, program leader, or institutional representative roles
