Job Requirements

  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt
  • satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check
  • pass initial pre-employment physical examination
  • pass work capacity fitness test carrying 45 lb pack for 3 miles within 45 minutes
  • mandatory pre-employment drug test and subject to random drug testing during employment
  • may require a valid state driver's license
  • must be 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment
  • all positions have medical qualification requirements
  • form BIA-4432 verification of Indian preference if claiming Indian Preference must be submitted
  • meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement

Job Qualifications

  • Six months of general work experience and six months of specialized work experience equivalent to GW/GS-03 level duties
  • specialized work experience including controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade
  • forest fire control, prevention, or suppression work
  • rescue operations
  • detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards
  • operation of fire communications equipment requiring specialized knowledge of firefighting techniques
  • controlling hazardous materials incidents
  • developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention
  • successful completion of a 2-year course of study above high school in Fire Training, Fire Science, Fire Technology or related fields
  • combination of education and work experience as described
  • ability to meet physical demands including extensive running, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, pulling hoses, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds
  • adaptability to work environment including forest, range, and desert with uneven terrain and exposure to smoke and extreme temperatures

Job Duties

  • Load helicopters
  • determine weight calculations
  • complete crew manifest
  • access remote areas by helicopter to construct helispots
  • attack small fires, hot spots, and spot fires
  • carry out specialized assignments such as tree felling, backfire, and burnout operations
  • operate light vehicles and 4X4s
