Job Requirements

  • hours worked per week must be stated for each season and position held in resume
  • physical ability to perform arduous fieldwork including running, climbing, lifting over 50 pounds
  • ability to work in challenging environmental conditions such as heat, smoke, uneven terrain
  • submission of transcripts to verify education
  • evaluation of foreign education if applicable
  • ability to live and work in remote backcountry camps
  • willingness to use personal protective equipment
  • must meet qualification requirements by closing date

Job Qualifications

  • six months of general work experience or firefighter training at high school level or above
  • one year of education or training above high school related to firefighting
  • combination of education and general work experience
  • six months of specialized work experience in fire suppression or prevention
  • successful completion of fire science or related courses
  • one year of specialized work experience at GW/GS-04 level
  • bachelor’s degree in fire science or related field
  • combination of education and specialized work experience
  • ability to follow rules and retain complex instructions

Job Duties

  • controlling or extinguishing wildland fires
  • performing rescue operations in fire-affected areas
  • conducting fire prevention and hazard reduction activities
  • operating fire communications and safety equipment
  • implementing fire training and safety programs
  • managing hazardous materials incidents related to fire
  • supporting firefighting logistics and camp management
