Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Valid state driver's license required
  • Ability and willingness to pass a background investigation
  • Compliance with drug testing including random testing
  • Availability for regular and recurring overtime and shift work during peak fire season
  • No active real estate license or financial interest in firms leasing federal lands
  • Direct deposit enrollment
  • Ability to work under potentially hazardous field conditions
  • May require one year probationary period
  • Adherence to safety and operational regulations
  • Completion of onboarding documentation including GSA Form 3607
  • Must provide proof of eligibility if claiming career transition assistance
  • Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service
  • Commitment to abiding by all federal laws and regulations relating to fire management and aviation operations
  • Ability to travel occasionally with frequent travel during peak fire activity

Job Qualifications

  • Current or former federal employee with one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GW/GS-09 level for GS-11
  • Non-federal employees must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GW/GS-10 level for GS-11
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GW/GS-11 level for GS-12
  • Experience managing wildland fire aviation management programs at unit, district, or state level
  • Experience developing and standardizing aviation policies and procedures
  • Experience providing guidance on aviation safety policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of fire management concepts, principles, and theories
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal aviation regulations
  • Competency in planning and evaluating operational plans
  • Ability to advise and collaborate with leadership and field personnel
  • Excellent communication skills for written and oral presentations
  • Familiarity with federal contracting procedures

Job Duties

  • Advises leadership and staff at the regional and field level on fire management policy and implementation strategies
  • Performs wildland fire readiness inspections for the state
  • Serves as the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) on all procured aviation contracts
  • Coordinates and provides guidance on all aircraft procedures
  • Interprets laws, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) for aviation and air operations statewide
  • Interprets guidance and recommendations at the regional and field level on aviation policy and procedures to evaluate effectiveness
  • Participates in the development of new regional/state wildland fire and aviation policy
  • Serves on various working groups, teams, and committees for the state/regional level
  • Advises on aviation assets, applications, and techniques statewide
  • Provides input to briefings at conferences and through written presentations
