Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Ability to pass background investigation and suitability determination
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and periodic medical examinations and physical fitness tests
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • Ability to submit to urinalysis drug screening and pass random drug tests
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including overtime and shifts during peak fire season
  • No active real estate license nor stock interest in firms with federal land interests
  • Direct deposit required
  • Must meet transfer requirements for special retirement coverage
  • May require one-year probationary period
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
  • Must comply with safety protocols and wear protective gear
  • No previous federal service required
  • Must provide documentation verifying incident management qualifications if applying at GW-08 level

Job Qualifications

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level
  • Experience understanding aerial retardant and base activities in wildland fire suppression
  • Experience managing and administering various contracts
  • Experience oversight and support of various aircraft at the base
  • Experience planning, scheduling and monitoring flights and resources at an airtanker or SEAT base (for GW-08 level)
  • Experience performing contract administration of aviation and retardant contracts (for GW-08 level)
  • Possession of National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications as a Fixed Wing Parking Tender (FWPT) or Aircraft Timekeeper (ATIM)
  • Ability to maintain training records and documentation
  • Leadership skills directing aviation firefighting personnel
  • Effective communication and coordination with multiple agencies and contractors
  • Mental and physical stamina for outdoor and demanding work conditions

Job Duties

  • Monitors and assesses aviation operations and base activities for compliance with established policy, guidelines, and regulations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective aviation operations
  • In the absence of the air base manager, serves as a point of contact with airport management, contractor’s representatives, public affairs, and various federal, state, and local entities, pertaining to aviation operations at the base
  • Participates in planning, scheduling and monitoring of all flights and resources utilizing the air base
  • Identifies and coordinates logistical needs for base support, a variety of incoming aircraft types and transient air crews
  • Oversees the mixing and loading of fire chemicals to ensure that individual aircraft weight limitations are not exceeded, and effective product is delivered
  • Coordinates with other air bases to identify needs, and to administer contract requirements
  • Ensures safe operations of aviation and ground support activities including radio and hand signal communication, aircraft movement, fueling, retardant mixing and loading, and vehicle movement on the ramp
  • Participates in daily informational briefings to aviation resources assigned to the base and providing daily risk assessments for planned and anticipated operations
  • Maintains training records and documentation for required base operations
  • Leads aviation firefighting personnel by directing their activities when supporting suppression actions associated with wildland fires
