Job Requirements

  • experience must include specific duties and hours worked per week for each season
  • physical demands include arduous exertion such as running, climbing, lifting over 50 pounds
  • ability to work in forest, range, and desert environments with extreme weather and terrain
  • must wear personal protective equipment
  • must be able to live in backcountry camps if required
  • proof of education with transcripts required
  • foreign education must be evaluated for equivalency
  • meet qualification requirements by closing date

Job Qualifications

  • six months of general work experience or six months of firefighter training from high school or above
  • one year of education or training above high school related to fire work
  • combination of education and general work experience
  • six months of general work experience plus six months of specialized experience equivalent to GW/GS-03 duties
  • successful completion of two-year college course in fire training, science, or technology
  • one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GW/GS-04 duties
  • successful completion of bachelor’s degree in fire science, training, or technology
  • combination of education and specialized work experience

Job Duties

  • controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of a fire department or brigade
  • conducting forest fire control, prevention, or suppression work
  • conducting rescue operations
  • detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards
  • operating fire communications equipment requiring specialized firefighting knowledge
  • controlling hazardous materials incidents
  • developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention
