Job Requirements

  • Must possess sight and hearing or use prosthetics enabling adequate sensory function
  • Must function independently with flexibility and integrity
  • Must meet general health requirements including medical and physical exam
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly and emotionally upset individuals
  • Must be able to push, pull and lift minimum 25 pounds to minimum height 5 feet and carry same weight for 50 feet
  • Must be able to taste and smell food to assess quality and palatability
  • May need to assist in evacuation during emergencies

Job Qualifications

  • No minimum education required
  • One year food experience in a supervisory capacity preferred but not necessary
  • Ability to cook a variety of foods in large quantities
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Ability to make independent decisions
  • Tactful communication with residents and personnel
  • Knowledge of food procedures
  • Leadership ability
  • Willingness to work harmoniously with staff
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain care of supplies, equipment and work areas

  • Ability to seek new methods and incorporate them into food practices

Job Duties

  • Process diet changes and new diets received from nursing services
  • Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms and reports
  • Inspect special diet trays to assure the correct diet is served
  • Coordinate food and nutrition services with other departments
  • Assist in establishing a food service production line
  • Ensure menus are maintained and reviewed
  • Assist in standardizing work methods
  • Ensure food procedures are followed
  • Assume responsibility and accountability of cook
  • Sweep and mop floors
  • Prepare food according to standardized recipes and special diets
  • Prepare and serve bedtime snacks and meals
  • Prepare and serve substitute foods as needed
  • Provide appropriate equipment and utensils with meals
  • Serve food according to portion control procedures
  • Report occupational exposures to the Certified Dietary Manager
  • Attend mandatory training programs and workshops
  • Assist or direct cleaning duties
  • Dispose of food and waste as per policies
  • Follow sanitary regulations in food preparation
  • Follow infection prevention policies
  • Ensure safety regulations are adhered to
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in department
  • Report accidents, incidents and hazardous conditions
  • Assist in inventory and storage of food and supplies
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs
  • Assist in food preparation for special events
  • Make authorized food substitutions
  • Assist in timely meal serving
  • Communicate effectively with medical, nursing staff and supervisors
  • Attend continuing education programs
