The City of Suffolk is proud to offer an engaging and dynamic role within its Division of Tourism through the position of Visitor Center Advisor. Suffolk is a vibrant city nestled in the Commonwealth of Virginia, well known for its historical significance, beautiful natural parks, cultural events, and community hospitality. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • one year of experience in hospitality, tourism, customer service, or related field
  • valid driver’s license
  • knowledge of city policies and tourism resources
  • ability to perform physical activities such as lifting up to 20 pounds and climbing ladders
  • ability to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and early mornings or evenings
  • proficiency with computers and office software
  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to handle monetary transactions accurately
  • ability to interact effectively with diverse groups including visitors and local businesses

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • one year previous experience or training in hospitality, tourism, customer service, marketing, office administration, or related fields
  • knowledge of local attractions, amenities, and transportation systems
  • computer proficiency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email programs
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • ability to maintain flexible work schedule including weekends, holidays, and varied hours

Job Duties

  • Greets and assists visitors promptly
  • provides accurate information regarding city’s highways, transportation systems, weather conditions, attractions, hotels, etc
  • assists with daily facility operations and maintenance of tourism locations and events
  • tracks and maintains inventory levels of supplies, publications, and gift shop merchandise
  • provides clerical support for gift shop sales including stocking merchandise and facilitating sales
  • handles monetary transactions and prepares bank deposits
  • communicates positively to promote city attractions, restaurants, and hotels
  • performs general and clerical tasks such as answering phones, data entry, filing, and processing mail
  • prepares and processes various forms, reports, and correspondence
  • operates computer systems and office equipment
  • coordinates with supervisors, volunteers, local businesses, community organizations, and visitors to facilitate operations
  • attends meetings and represents the city at special events
  • assists with lodging arrangements and sells tickets for historical and cultural functions
  • sets up and breaks down equipment and exhibits
  • maintains knowledge of museum and visitor center exhibits
  • assists with farmers' market and special event operations
