Job Requirements

  • Valid South Dakota teaching certificate/coaching endorsement
  • Employment as teacher or teacher aid (preferred)
  • Previous coaching experience in assigned sport desired
  • Knowledge and experience in assigned sport preferred

Job Duties

  • Thorough knowledge of all athletic policy and responsibility for implementation
  • Knowledge of and compliance with pertinent SDHSAA and ESD regulations
  • Understands proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent grievances through proper channels
  • Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation in program
  • Scheduling and transportation responsibilities
  • Prepare for practice, contests, and special events, and adhere to practice schedules and facility utilization
  • Provides documentation to Activities Director for fulfilling pertinent SDHSAA and district requirements concerning physical examinations, parent consent, and student eligibility
  • Provides proper safeguards for security of assigned equipment sites
  • Provides training rules not inconsistent with the Student Conduct-Student Activity policy
  • Provide supervision at all practices, games, and while traveling
  • Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams
  • Determines and communicates routine discipline to participants and parents
  • Accountable to the Head Coach and/or Activities Director for issuing and collecting all equipment as well as annual inventory records and reporting
  • Recommends budgetary items annually to head coach per assignment
  • Permits athletes in athletic facilities only during authorized/supervised times
  • Checks locker rooms before and after use for cleanliness
  • Responsible for maintenance of sport equipment
  • Secures all facilities before leaving
  • Assists Head Coach/AD as assigned
  • Makes media releases and school announcements timely
  • Teaches current sport rules and fundamentals
  • Maintains statistics as needed to adhere to athletic awards policy
  • Works within the basic framework and philosophy of coaching team
  • Attends all staff meetings and fulfills scouting duties
  • Arrives early enough for meetings, practices, and contests to adequately prepare
  • Assists in organization and implementation of in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight training programs
  • Never criticizes or argues with other coaching or staff members in the presence of players or parents
  • Improves knowledge and skills by attending district and area coaching clinics and utilizing other resources
  • Attends contests, when possible, of other teams in the sport program
  • Performs other duties consistent with extra duty assignment or as requested by coaching staff or Activities Director
