Job Requirements

  • USCG 100TN Captain's license
  • Minimum 5 years of vessel piloting and navigation experience
  • Experience operating vessels from 12-50 feet in length
  • Ability to work independently and manage vessel systems
  • Physical ability to lift 50 pounds and navigate rugged terrain
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally about 40% of the year
  • Ability to work in harsh weather and offshore conditions
  • Compliance with USCG, OSHA, and safety regulations
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to pass USCG physical

Job Qualifications

  • USCG 100TN Captain's license or OUPV 'Six-pack' license may be considered
  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience piloting, navigating, and maintaining vessels as a licensed merchant mariner
  • Demonstrated proficiency operating small vessels from 12-50 feet with additional experience as master, mate or engineer on larger vessels desirable
  • Current STCW basic safety training certificate is desirable
  • Commercial driver’s license and towing experience for oversized trailers desirable
  • Experience working in fast-paced construction or consulting environments
  • Instrumentation experience with echosounders, GNSS/GPS receivers, chart plotters, radar, mobile LiDAR, multibeam echo-sounders, sidescan sonar, GPS-integrated inertial navigation systems, and underwater video
  • Familiarity with sampling equipment including vibracorer, Van Veen, Niskin samplers, otter-trawls, box-corer, and gravity corer is beneficial
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Ability to pass USCG physical

Job Duties

  • Work aboard boats from approximately 12-250 feet in length domestically and internationally
  • Independently manage and operate Tetra Tech-owned vessels from 12-50 feet at various project locations in the USA
  • Take full responsibility for vessel operation including navigation, towing, launch and recovery, and maintenance of safety, mechanical and electrical systems
  • Operate as vessel master making decisions and recommendations while following project leadership
  • Manage deck activities during collection of multibeam and single beam echosounder data, sediment and water sampling, and deployment of oceanographic platforms
  • Configure, operate and repair vessels in remote locations using available materials and tools
  • Identify and communicate risks related to vessel systems and project goals to ensure safe and effective task completion
  • Develop and follow plans, specifications, standard operating procedures, and promote safety protocols
  • Competently use Microsoft Office, Windows OS, and specialized surveying and charting software
  • Maintain and troubleshoot vessel motors, controls, electronics, and trailers including repairs of mechanical components
  • Pilot boats precisely along survey lines using navigation software and survey equipment
  • Exhibit self-motivation, strong communication skills, and willingness to learn new skills
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Travel domestically and internationally approximately 40% of the year for assignments of varying duration
  • Work in challenging weather and offshore conditions
  • Safely load and unload equipment up to 50 pounds and navigate rugged terrain and ship ladders
  • Ensure compliance with USCG, OSHA, and internal procedures
  • Pursue continuous professional development
  • Report all health and safety incidents
  • Perform additional duties as required
