Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum one year of unit secretary experience preferred
  • Completion of one year of college or minimum of one year of experience in medical field preferred
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA and patient rights required
  • Ability to read, write legibly, speak English and preferably Spanish
  • Ability to use computer, printer and necessary software programs
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot equipment required for the position
  • Ability to perform unit secretarial and clerical activities as needed
  • Ability to be assertive and consistent in following policies
  • Ability to work calmly and courteously under pressure
  • Ability to accept and follow directions
  • Ability to perform basic math functions
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments effectively
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload
  • Ability to collaborate with nurse in charge to problem solve
  • Ability to recall information accurately
  • Ability to distinguish colors and identify various sounds associated with the workplace
  • Ability to see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents
  • Basic life support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association, either obtained or acquired during orientation

Job Duties

  • Greets and screens the public upon arrival to unit/department
  • Recognizes potentially dangerous situations with visitors, patients and families and takes appropriate action
  • Assists with facilitating optimal patient flow and coordinates diagnostic testing as ordered by the physician or nurse practitioner
  • Maintains supplies, equipment, and forms
  • Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service, safety, and professionalism
  • Performs secretarial and receptionist duties that contribute to the smooth operation of assigned unit/department
  • Collaborates with nurse in charge to problem solve
