Job Requirements

  • National Guard membership is required
  • Must be a member of the employing state's National Guard prior to placement
  • Must wear military uniform as a condition of employment
  • Eligible for immediate military membership and employment
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered for Selective Service
  • Federal employment suitability via background investigation
  • Mandatory participation in direct deposit
  • Must obtain and maintain required security clearance
  • Must complete Army Aviation Safety Officer course within 1 year of hire if not already qualified
  • External applicants must be able to start within 6 months of selection
  • Appointments may suspend military incentives
  • Acceptance of excepted service position terms
  • Must submit Federal Aviation Administration or military aviation certifications and DA Form 1059 with application

Job Qualifications

  • Military grades CW2 to CW4
  • Federal Aviation Administration certifications from accredited civilian programs or equivalent military aviation certifications
  • Completion of Army Instructor Pilot Course (DA Form 1059) from Army school house
  • Minimum of one year on-the-job experience relevant to next higher grade
  • Specialized experience in operating and instructing in main-frame military aircraft
  • Experience in mission planning, crew briefing, and flight safety operations
  • Knowledge of flight theory, air navigation, meteorology, flying directives, mission tactics, and operating procedures
  • Experience with aviation safety programs and regulations from DoD, Army, National Guard Bureau, and OSHA
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Competency in both flight instruction and safety advising roles

Job Duties

  • Plan and implement flight training and instruction for rated and instructor pilots
  • Train, instruct, and evaluate pilots in advanced instrument flight techniques
  • Instruct pilots in methods of instruction and evaluate instructor pilot proficiency
  • Conduct training flights involving advanced helicopter operations including combat maneuvers and aerial gunnery
  • Provide classroom instruction and evaluate pilot readiness to remain in flight status
  • Advise and represent the Commander on aviation and ground safety matters
  • Develop, maintain, and conduct safety programs and accident prevention initiatives
  • Investigate safety violations and serve on accident investigation boards
  • Conduct refresher and mission continuation training in fixed wing and utility helicopters
  • Perform operational flight assignments and maintenance test flights
  • Serve as safety liaison with external agencies and ensure compliance with occupational safety laws
