Job Requirements

  • At least 1 year relevant classroom or after-school experience in teaching or tutoring elementary, middle or high school youth or one year of post-secondary education in a related field
  • Additional relevant experience may substitute for education
  • Proven ability to work with youth in a respectful and caring manner focusing on increasing self-esteem and academic skills
  • Cultural competence in working with low-income youth and families from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • Academic competence in reading, writing and math
  • Strong classroom management, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with schools, scholars, parents, community representatives and general public
  • Afternoon availability typical hours 2:00 - 5:00 pm M - Th with some Friday hours in summer and 4:00 - 8:00 pm M - Th with some daytime hours possible in school year
  • Criminal history background checks required prior to employment

Job Qualifications

  • Proven ability to work with youth respectfully and support academic and personal growth
  • Cultural competence in diverse, low-income communities
  • Academic competence in reading, writing and math
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with scholars, families and community
  • Bilingual in East African languages, Spanish, or Vietnamese preferred
  • Experience working with immigrant and refugee youth

Job Duties

  • Assist the center supervisor in planning and coordinating after school tutoring
  • Fulfill basic center supervisor responsibilities when supervisor is unavailable
  • Work with supervisor and volunteers to assess students and develop individualized learning goals
  • Monitor implementation of learning goals by youth interns and volunteers
  • Maintain organized and accessible learning materials and resources
  • Support volunteer and student pairs during tutoring sessions including matching volunteers with students
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to interns and volunteers
  • Assist in the daily management of center activities
  • Tutor and mentor students individually and in small groups
  • Build supportive relationships with students to increase confidence
  • Follow individual learning plans during tutoring sessions
  • Assist in implementing language arts and math curriculum
  • Help students with homework assignments
  • Foster a respectful and inclusive environment
  • Model respectful and inclusive behavior for staff, volunteers, students, and parents
  • Attend cultural competency and anti-racism trainings
  • Support relationship building between tutors and students
  • Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Assist with record keeping and tracking student academic progress
  • Attend training workshops and staff meetings as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
