Job Requirements
- no formal education required
- valid class a or b commercial driver’s license
- four years full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment
- ability to perform minor mechanical repairs in the field
- ability to work in hazardous conditions and inclement weather
- willingness to participate in a u.s. department of labor apprenticeship program
- ability to climb high steel structures
- ability to travel as needed
Job Qualifications
- valid class a or b commercial driver’s license
- four years full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers
- successful completion of an approved vocational school program may substitute for two years of experience
- knowledge of safety practices in structural steel construction
- knowledge of construction and maintenance procedures
- ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform appropriate repairs
- ability to read blueprints and operation manuals
- ability to operate motorized equipment and hand and power tools
- ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
- ability to follow oral and written instructions
- ability to maintain accurate records
Job Duties
- operates a hydraulic crane
- utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate
- utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate
- leads or trains lower-level equipment operators
- assists the core driller in positioning the drilling rig
- adds rods or augers to drill
- removes core samples from the core barrel
- assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment
- installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes
- cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed
- sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal
- performs minor mechanical repairs such as changing tires, blades, or filters
- maintains equipment by cleaning, lubricating, and checking fluid levels
- erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects
- shovels materials

- flags traffic at work zones
- maintains accurate records of maintenance activities and equipment gauges
