Job Requirements

  • no formal education required
  • valid class a or b commercial driver’s license
  • four years full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment
  • ability to perform minor mechanical repairs in the field
  • ability to work in hazardous conditions and inclement weather
  • willingness to participate in a u.s. department of labor apprenticeship program
  • ability to climb high steel structures
  • ability to travel as needed

Job Qualifications

  • valid class a or b commercial driver’s license
  • four years full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers
  • successful completion of an approved vocational school program may substitute for two years of experience
  • knowledge of safety practices in structural steel construction
  • knowledge of construction and maintenance procedures
  • ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform appropriate repairs
  • ability to read blueprints and operation manuals
  • ability to operate motorized equipment and hand and power tools
  • ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • ability to maintain accurate records

Job Duties

  • operates a hydraulic crane
  • utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate
  • utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate
  • leads or trains lower-level equipment operators
  • assists the core driller in positioning the drilling rig
  • adds rods or augers to drill
  • removes core samples from the core barrel
  • assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment
  • installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes
  • cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed
  • sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal
  • performs minor mechanical repairs such as changing tires, blades, or filters
  • maintains equipment by cleaning, lubricating, and checking fluid levels
  • erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects
  • shovels materials
  • cleans culverts
  • mows
  • brush cuts
  • flags traffic at work zones
  • maintains accurate records of maintenance activities and equipment gauges
