Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Alabama bus driver certificate and commercial driver's license (CDL)
- Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screening compliance
- Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification or obtain within six months
- Completion of auto mechanic apprenticeship, trade/technical program, or five years’ experience as school bus mechanic
- Ability to meet Alabama Child Protection Act suitability criteria
- Competent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities
- Proficiency in diagnostics and mechanical repair
- Ability to use transportation software and diagnostic tools
- Physical strength and stamina to perform job duties
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various conditions
- Willingness to work flexible hours including emergencies
- Punctuality and regular attendance
- Compliance with board policies and regulations
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Maintain current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and meet drug screening requirements
- Possess and maintain valid Alabama bus driver certificate and commercial driver's license (CDL)
- Obtain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification within six months of employment
- Completion of certified auto mechanic apprenticeship or trade/technical program in auto mechanics or five years of successful experience as a school bus shop mechanic
- Ability to meet employment suitability criteria under Alabama Child Protection Act
- Competent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership, supervision, and decision-making ability
- Proficiency with tools and diagnostic equipment
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and implement preventive maintenance programs
- Proven success in automotive mechanical repair
- Ability to follow safety and shop operation rules
- Skilled in transportation, routing, GPS tracking software, and applicable technology
- Physical strength to lift up to 50 pounds and exert up to 75 pounds of force
- Physical ability to engage in prolonged sitting, standing, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, climbing, and reaching
- Willingness to work in noisy, crowded environments and inclement weather year-round
- Ability to work after hours, weekends, or holidays as needed
- Punctuality and regular attendance
- Willingness to comply with any alternative qualifications as required by the Board
Job Duties
- Provide excellent vehicle maintenance services for school buses and other vehicles
- Assist transportation personnel in diagnosing, preventing, and correcting transportation problems or unsafe conditions
- Manage and supervise mechanics, parts clerk, shop assistants, and other assigned personnel
- Perform monthly safety inspections on buses as required by the State of Alabama
- Assign schedules and evaluate performance of transportation shop personnel
- Supervise maintenance and mechanical work on all school-owned vehicles and equipment
- Coordinate warranty issues for all vehicles
- Organize maintenance records for all vehicles
- Assist in investigations of accidents involving school vehicles and handle claims
- Purchase parts and equipment for vehicle and equipment repair
- Manage fiscal and inventory control of parts, supplies, fuel, and oil
- Maintain clean, neat, and safe shop and storage areas
- Develop bid specifications for bus fleet maintenance items
- Schedule and conduct training for transportation shop personnel
- Perform road call duty as needed
- Serve as substitute bus driver when required
- Respond promptly to emergency call outs
- Engage in continuing education to upgrade mechanical skills
- Prioritize and monitor work of assigned personnel
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality
- Identify potential problems and opportunities for improvement
- Respond timely to inquiries, feedback, and concerns
- Maintain and submit accurate reports and records
- Properly use and oversee equipment and materials
- Collaborate effectively as a team member
- Adhere to school system rules, policies, and regulations
- Report absences and request leave according to procedures
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
