Job Description
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is dedicated to protecting the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce. As part of this mission, TSA employs Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) who serve as the frontline guardians of travel security across airports in the United States. Job Requirements
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. national status
- Minimum age of 18 at time of application
- Selective Service registration for males
- Passing a structured interview
- Successful drug screening and medical evaluation
- Background investigation clearance
- Subject to post-employment random drug and alcohol testing
- Availability to work various shifts and overtime
- Proficiency in English
- Mandatory training travel
- Ability to meet physical demands including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for prolonged periods, walking up to three miles during a shift
- No relocation or pre-employment travel reimbursement
- Adherence to TSA dress and appearance policies
- No felony convictions or serious conduct issues affecting suitability
- Compliance with TSA fitness and certification standards
Job Qualifications
- At least one year of full-time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician
- High school diploma or equivalent such as GED, HiSET, or TASC
- Volunteer or National Service experience counts towards qualifications
- Ability to pass aptitude and medical assessments including color vision, hearing, and physical ability
- Successful completion of background and security investigation requirements
- Proficiency in English including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension
- Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime
- Willingness to travel occasionally for training
Job Duties
- Operating screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers
- Performing searches and screenings including pat-downs and property inspections
- Controlling terminal entry and exit points
- Interacting with the public providing directions and responding to inquiries
- Maintaining focus and awareness in a high-stress environment with distractions and time pressures
- Applying critical thinking skills to mitigate security threats using risk-based screening protocols
- Implementing knowledge of standard operating procedures and demonstrating responsible and adaptable behavior
