Job Description

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is the federal agency responsible for ensuring the security and protection of travelers, transportation systems, and critical infrastructure across the United States. Established to safeguard air travel after the events of September 11, 2001, TSA plays a pivotal role in maintaining national security by preventing dangerous objects and threats from entering aircraft and public transportation environments. Job Requirements

  • You must possess U.S. citizenship or be a U.S. national
  • Must be at least 18 years old at time of application
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Must pass structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation and background investigation
  • Subject to post-employment random drug and/or alcohol testing
  • Must be available to work various shifts and overtime as needed
  • Must be proficient in English
  • Mandatory travel for training and occasional travel may be required
  • Exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals inherent in position
  • Must meet physical agility and stamina requirements including ability to lift up to 50 pounds, squat, bend, walk up to three miles and stand for extended periods
  • No moving, relocation or pre-employment travel expenses will be paid
  • Must adhere to TSA dress and appearance standards
  • Must maintain certification and fitness for duty
  • Must comply with security and background check processes
  • Ability to work in a stressful, high-demand environment

Job Qualifications

  • At least one year of full-time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening or as an x-ray technician
  • Or have a high school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC high school equivalency certificate
  • Volunteer or national service experience related to security or customer service may be credited
  • Proficiency in English including reading, writing, speaking and comprehension
  • Ability to meet physical requirements including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for prolonged periods
  • Successful completion of structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation and background investigation
  • Willingness to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed
  • Ability to maintain certification and fitness for duty through ongoing training and testing

Job Duties

  • Operating various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers, preventing those objects from being transported onto aircraft
  • Performing searches and screening which may include physical interaction with passengers, conducting bag searches and lifting or carrying bags weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Controlling terminal entry and exit points
  • Interacting with the public, giving directions and responding to inquiries
  • Maintaining focus and awareness while working in a stressful environment including noise, crowd distractions, time pressure and disruptive passengers
  • Engaging in continuous development of critical thinking skills to mitigate actual and potential security threats using risk-based screening protocols
  • Retaining and implementing knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures, demonstrating responsible and adaptable behavior
