Job Description
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), an agency within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is responsible for safeguarding the nation's transportation systems and ensuring the security of travelers across the United States. Job Requirements
- Be a U.S. citizen or national
- Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application
- Selective Service registration required for males
- Pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation
- Subject to post-employment random drug and/or alcohol testing
- Availability to work various shifts and overtime
- Proficient in English including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension
- Occasional travel required for training
- Meet physical demands including agility and lifting
- Must adhere to TSA dress and appearance standards
- No relocation or pre-employment travel expenses paid
- Must maintain certification and fitness for duty
- Must comply with TSA standards regarding tattoos and piercings
Job Qualifications
- At least one year of full-time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician
- High school diploma, General Educational Development (GED), High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) certificate
- Volunteer experience through national service programs may be credited
- Ability to meet physical demands including lifting 50 pounds and standing for prolonged periods
- Successful completion of assessments including TAB, structured interview, drug screening, and medical evaluation
Job Duties
- Operating various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers, and preventing those objects from being transported onto aircraft
- Performing searches and screening, which may include physical interaction with passengers, conducting bag searches and lifting/carrying bags, bins, and property weighing up to 50lbs
- Controlling terminal entry and exit points
- Interacting with the public, giving directions and responding to inquiries
- Maintaining focus and awareness while working in a stressful environment including noise, crowd distractions, time pressure, and disruptive passengers
- Engaging in continuous development of critical thinking skills to mitigate security threats by applying appropriate situational options
- Retaining and implementing knowledge of all applicable standard operating procedures, demonstrating responsible and dependable behavior and adaptability
