Job Requirements

  • valid paramedic certification
  • current Indiana and/or Michigan paramedic license
  • completion of Emergency Vehicle Operations Course certification
  • maintenance of BCLS and other required certifications
  • ability to work 12-hour shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call
  • ability to respond to Memorial Hospital South Bend within 30 minutes
  • physical ability to perform patient lifting and other duties
  • adherence to universal precautions and infection control practices
  • reliable communication skills
  • ability to pass background checks and meet departmental competencies
  • commitment to comply with organizational policies and procedures

Job Qualifications

  • completion of Indiana or State EMS-approved paramedic course meeting St. Joseph County EMS guidelines
  • current unrestricted Indiana or Michigan paramedic license
  • current or previous National Registry certification preferred
  • one year of paramedic experience preferred
  • ability to obtain and maintain Critical Care Paramedic or Flight Paramedic Certification within two years
  • demonstrated knowledge of ambulance and transport equipment
  • strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
  • proficiency in sterile techniques and universal precautions
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • leadership and organizational skills
  • ability to work independently and in stressful situations
  • computer proficiency including data entry and word processing
  • awareness of legal issues in patient care and transport
  • commitment to ongoing education and training

Job Duties

  • perform paramedic procedures approved by the Advance Life Support Committee
  • function as a member of the Beacon Health System Transport Team managing various patient conditions
  • apply in-depth knowledge for patient assessment and stabilization
  • collaborate with team members to develop care plans and manage emergency situations
  • establish and maintain a safe and therapeutic transport environment
  • operate two-way radio and GPS systems
  • maintain current contact information and route maps
  • administer oxygen using appropriate equipment
  • perform airway suctioning
  • monitor and document patient status and care
  • initiate peripheral intravenous and intraosseous access and administer IV fluids
  • obtain laboratory samples and complete point-of-care testing
  • perform CPR, intubation, cardioversion, defibrillation, and tension pneumothorax relief
  • administer approved medications
  • provide HIPAA-compliant follow-up communication to requesting agencies
  • evaluate new equipment and participate in equipment maintenance and inspection
  • complete and maintain required certifications and trainings
  • document care and maintain equipment logs
  • serve as shift charge as needed, including staffing assessment and liaison duties
  • assist with patient care including feeding, bathing, and procedures as requested
  • support trauma and code situations in the hospital
  • transport patients within hospital departments
  • complete other job-related duties as assigned
