Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in program coordination or community service activities
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Valid California driver's license
  • Willingness to submit to background investigation, fingerprinting and drug/alcohol screening
  • Enrollment in California DMV Pull Notice Program required
  • Ability to provide first aid and CPR as needed
  • Current City of South Gate employee
  • Ability to work under general supervision
  • Ability to provide oversight to part-time staff and volunteers

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public administration, recreation management, urban planning or a related field preferred
  • Experience in transit program coordination or community services preferred
  • Knowledge of transportation infrastructure and public service program planning
  • Strong organizational, communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
  • Experience supervising staff and coordinating volunteers
  • Proficient in preparing reports, public communications and budget input
  • Valid California driver's license
  • Certification in first aid and CPR preferred

Job Duties

  • Schedules, organizes, coordinates and implements transit programs, workshops and special events
  • Prepares schedule of events and secures necessary personnel, equipment and materials for program activities
  • Monitors and supervises transit program participants
  • Maintains established guidelines for effective and safe programs
  • Assists in assessment of community needs and recommends improvements to current programs and events
  • Provides input to department budget
  • Provides work direction to part-time staff and volunteers
  • Recruits, trains and evaluates staff and volunteers
  • Meets with community groups, governmental and private agencies to obtain services, programs and support
  • Communicates plans, policies and procedures to various groups and the general public
  • Resolves patron problems according to established guidelines
  • Prepares publicity releases, reports, brochures and general promotions of programs
  • Purchases program supplies and equipment, responsible for inventory control
  • Prepares and maintains records including attendance, registration, incidents and equipment use
  • Conducts transportation-related research and prepares reports
  • Opens and closes facilities
  • Schedules and prepares facilities and recreation areas for use
  • Performs routine custodial work as needed
  • May collect fees and register patrons for transportation programs
  • Administers first aid and CPR as needed
  • May perform other Recreation Coordinator duties as assigned
