Job Requirements

  • associate's degree in civil/traffic engineering or related field
  • one (1) year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • possession of a valid state of florida driver's license
  • possession of certificates mot, signs technician levels i (includes pavement), pavement markings ii - courses: signs and pavement markings, traffic signals, work zone traffic control safety - level 1 certification within six (6) months of hire and level ii within nine (9) months
  • possession of mot intermediate certificate within six (6) months of hire and mot advanced within one (1) year

  • knowledge of civil engineering practices as they pertain to roads (traffic signage and pavement markings)
  • knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and codes related to traffic
  • knowledge of principles and practices of technical writing and data preparation
  • knowledge of safety practices, protective equipment, and clothing
  • knowledge of tools, equipment, and techniques used for traffic sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance
  • knowledge of office administration practices, concepts, and automation applications
  • knowledge of municipal code, directives, and procedures and of city services and operations
  • knowledge and principles of customer service and telephone etiquette
  • skill in the use of computers and software/program applications, eg, spreadsheet and word processing applications, such as microsoft word, excel, and outlook

  • ability to operate sign and marking equipment and traffic counting equipment in the midst of traffic and possible adverse weather conditions

Job Duties

  • assist in developing layouts for road signs and markings
  • install city signs and pavement markings established by the manual of uniform traffic control devices (mutcd)
  • assist in fabricating city signs using computer and vinyl cutter/plotter and repair city signs
  • assist in purchasing and maintaining inventory of city signs and signposts and mounting materials
  • use gis/gps programs for preparation of the city's mapping and sign inventory
  • assist with collection of field data for reporting and planning purposes and preparation of gis data base analysis
  • assist in conducting field site inspections for traffic calming
  • assist in maintaining files for all signs in the city by using the geographical information system (gis) program
  • install new signs and pavement markings, speed humps, and radar speed advisory signs
  • assist in calculating quantities and cost estimates for assigned public works and utility construction projects and assist in obtain vendor/contractor price quotes, produce requisitions, and sign off on purchase orders for equipment, materials, and supplies related to work assignments
  • assist in performing field work including surveying and staking of in-house work force projects using a variety of technical survey equipment and reduce field survey notes and computer traverses, grades, closures, distances, and areas for office use
  • assist in conducting traffic and parking surveys, compile and tabulate information and produce traffic count reports and maintain related reports and files
  • assist in developing striping, signage, and/or detour plans related to traffic flow and control and make recommendations regarding traffic control devices
  • file and retrieve engineering and related plans, maps, exhibits and various documents and update files and maintain document reference and retrieval systems
  • assist with public outreach events
  • perform other related job duties as assigned
